These treatments and the manner we comb and dry our coats can destroy follicles resulting in the weakening of the hair shafts. Panthenol, because it is a small molecule, penetrates the papilla (coat root) and the shaft of the coat. Penetration of the coat shaft occurs through osmosis. Panthenol can increase the diameter of the coat up to 10%, creating a thicker coat. This increase in diameter is caused by the restoration of essential moisture and not by coating the coat shaft or by cuticle "explosion". Panthenol can repair damage to the coat shaft caused by chemicals, use of a harsh shampoo or styling tools and can repair split ends.
