With our newest formulation, Pulsar®, we have gone further. We strongly believe the benefits of a low glycemic index can be enhanced beyond the current levels in conventional grain free pet foods. The approach we have taken is to increase the use of pulses as a primary source of our carbohydrates. Pulses are the edible seeds of legume plants. Peas are a pulse and there are others. For Pulsar®, we have added red lentils as the primary pulse with peas. The combination packs a very powerful nutritional punch by not only reducing the glycemic index but also enhancing both digestibility through superior dietary fiber and elevating antioxidant qualities to help fend off dangerous toxins. Quality animal protein remains the number one ingredient in Pulsar® grain free. We have developed chicken and salmon alternatives for consumers to choose. The evolution of Pulsar® is our mission to improve the health benefits available from grain free food – with no compromise. Although Horizon is a relatively new manufacturer, we have always maintained a standard of never compromising quality.
What are Pulses?
Pulses – Peas + Lentils
Our philosophy at Horizon Pet Nutrition is to seek new combinations of exceptional ingredients to optimize pet nutrition and push the boundaries of dietary evolution. The cornerstone of our newest innovation is the incorporation of peas and lentils as the key carbohydrate and fiber sources in Pulsar®. Pulses are the edible seeds of the legume plants. These would include peas, lentils, chickpeas, fava beans, etc. In many ways, pulses are wonder ingredients and as you learn more, we hope you are as excited about peas and lentils as we are at Horizon.
For Pulsar®, we have added red lentils as the primary pulse with peas. The combination packs a very powerful nutritional punch by not only reducing the glycemic index but also enhancing both digestibility through superior dietary fiber and elevating antioxidant qualities to help fend of dangerous toxins. Why are They Good for Your Dog?
Pulses are rich in protein, high in antioxidants, low in fat, gluten free, sodium free and provide an exceptionally low glycemic index.
A Meat Based Diet
With Pulsar, we start with a quality animal protein as the primary ingredient. We offer the choice of chicken or fish dependent on your preference. This also offers you the opportunity to rotate the diet from time to time to change up the animal protein. For our chicken or fish diets, we focus on a single animal protein to limit the potential for allergic complications resulting combinations of proteins. The chicken and fish that Horizon uses is of the highest quality sourced from local producers whose primary market is the human food chain.
A Fulsome Combination
In addition to the quality animal protein and pulses we use in Pulsar, we also round out the dietary profile with an array of fruits, vegetables, botanicals and vitamins. We formulate the ingredient mix to include essential nutrients, balanced for absorption, digestibility and palatability. These include carrots, apples, broccoli, bok choy, cabbage, blueberries, pineapple, yucca, aspergillus, vitamins A, D3, E and B12. Lastly, Pulsar is naturally preserved with vitamin E with no added preservatives, colors or artificial flavours. All of the ingredients we use in Pulsar are purposeful and intended to contribute to the health and welfare of your pet. We ask a simple question when we develop a new food - Will this ingredient make the food better? If it doesn't, it is not included.
Low G.I. Ratings Have Proven Health Benefits
We strongly believe the benefits of a low glycemic index can be enhanced beyond the current levels in conventional grain free pet foods. GI is a ranking of carbohydrates on a scale from 0 to 100, according to the extent to which they raise blood sugar levels after eating. Low GI improves glucose and lipid levels in those with diabetes, helps control weight because the help mitigate appetite and dietary hunger and they also reduce insulin and insulin resistance. Low GI is a positive attribute in overall health and pulses are some of the lowest GI foods.
The lower the Glycemic Index, the better the food is for minimizing spikes in blood sugar levels.
Good Fiber is an Unquestioned Benefit
Fiber is essential for rapid digestion, maximum absorption and assimilation of essential vitamins and minerals. It increases stool weight allowing for bulkier stool that more easily passes through the colon and reduces intestinal transit time. Good fiber is an unquestioned benefit and pulses are some of the very best sources.
For Pulsar®, we have added red lentils as the primary pulse with peas. The combination packs a very powerful nutritional punch by not only reducing the glycemic index but also enhancing both digestibility through superior dietary fiber.
Good fiber is an unquestioned benefit and pulses are some of the very best sources. The higher level of grams per cup is a better source of dietary fiber.
Antioxidants – Fighting the Free Radicals
Antioxidants are nature's way of fighting off potentially dangerous molecules in the body. Such molecules come in the form of synthetic chemicals such as pesticides, plastics, and chlorine by-products, they are called free radicals. Free radicals are unstable molecules that essentially feed off of otherwise healthy molecules in order to survive. Everyday, tens of thousands of free radicals are generated within the body, causing cell damage that can lead to chronic and degenerative diseases, if left unchecked. The body sometimes creates its own free radicals in order to destroy viruses or bacteria. To balance out these unruly molecules, the body also creates antioxidants, which have the sole purpose of neutralizing free radicals. The body is only designed to create a certain amount of antioxidants on its own, however, and as we are faced with an ever-growing number of environmental toxins, the body is less capable of fighting off the unwanted harmful invaders.
The combination of red lentils and peas elevates antioxidant qualities to help fend off dangerous toxins.
